This month was “just another brick in the wall”….I turned another year older and the obstacles kept coming. Our kitchen project continues to be a huge challenge and this summer was really the UN-summer. We did NOT have any great vacations, not even any great weekends away. We spent a ton of money and then ran into roadblocks at every turn. I was carrying drywall and wood pieces to the truck and to the dump and then turning around and dragging my sore, tired body to the pool to get the miles in. Work was a drain. It was a hard month, emotionally and physically.
My analogy of this swim being like someone living with mental illness really feels true. Many days I feel like “how badly do you really want this, Tammy??” I felt like I swam and swam and SWAM and at the end of the month, I made it to 27.5 miles: 1.9 miles above my goal. I could have SWORN it would be about 10 miles over based on how hard I felt I worked!! GEESH.
Our bedroom wall has an emblem on it: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” Philippians 4:13. I wake up to it every morning and it is the last thing that I see as I turn out the light. Yesterday, Vicki Bowe-Fisher, my good friend and former Ironman training buddy showed up at the pool. She kicked my butt back and forth for a good half-mile, breaking the monotony and invigorating my spirit. Another friend surprised me with a $100 check over lunch a few weeks ago. God shows up when I need it most, in the faces and hugs of the people that I love. I do recognize this and I am most grateful, even in the midst of the things that stretch me thin.
My goal now is to finish this endeavor by December 15th, for a few reasons. 1) Katie’s injury was December 18th so I want to be done by then. 2)I don’t want to be still swimming at Christmas 3) I want to have the “finish line party” before the holidays (MARK YOUR CALENDARS!) so that donations will be tax deductible for this year 🙂 The meaning of this is that starting TODAY, September 1st, I need to increase my mileage to 6.7 miles per week. That means, pretty much, that I need to swim 5 days per week, and that I need to try to swim as many 2-milers as I can.
How can you help?? Well, if you’re a swimmer, JOIN ME!! I need the help! If you’re not a swimmer, PRAY FOR ME, and send moral support!!! Send me Facebook messages or messages on Katie’s website!! Please!!! Third, mark your calendar for the weekend of December 15th because that WILL be the weekend of the finish line EXTRAVAGANZA!!! BIG PARTY, FOOD, RAFFLE ITEMS, collecting donations, and most importantly, CELEBRATING!!!
Time to hit the pool again soon. Enjoy your Labor Day weekend, my peeps!!
